The level of detail here is really impressive, terrific read! Jared Weiss had a piece on the Athletic associating Noah Laroche’s system in Memphis with CLA (constraints learning approach) and how CLA encourages offenses that move with max speed “LaRoche believes waiting for a big to set a screen wastes time and adds traffic, eliminating affordances unnecessarily.” Do you think a Miami style offense is merely a floor raiser for teams with subpar top line creators or that it could push teams with premier options to even higher heights by adding more chaos?

Thank you! I don't get into the X's and O's stuff too heavily usually, because not everyone likes that level of detail, but every once in a while I feel an itch ha.

Truthfully, I think the answer to your question is probably closer to floor raiser than ceiling raiser. We obviously haven't seen defenses figure it out for Miami yet, but I have to think there will be a point where smart teams find a way to consistently slow the Heat down.

This upcoming stretch of games will be so interesting, because Miami plays Cleveland twice in a row and then New York twice in a row. I want to see if either team can adjust in Game 2 after they've seen what happened the first time; if Miami can excel despite the other team's familiarity, maybe this thing will have some legs!

Also, I write every summer about how zone defense is still a very small part of NBA defense overall, but this kind of offense feels like it could be vulnerable to a smart zone defense if teams can get it set up fast enough in transition. Miami's best chance at avoiding that is to simply outrun the defense. So far, it's worked.

Great piece! Had seen the Jaquez bounce-back on the box score, so cool to see it given some depth.

I wonder how you think Herro will fare in this type of system? His on-ball creation has always left something to be desired imo, so maybe he is their spot up shooting change-up?

Also “Chelonian” and “Juan Wick” back to back like that is simply too good. Seriously one of the best pieces of work on this website I think.

One note about Jaquez's driving ability, it was his best (imo, surely some stat head can back me up/counter) weapon during his rookie year.

He doesn't have the best handles, but his strength, back downs, and footwork were great at walking the defender into the paint for a layup. Reminds me of Jimmy's mismatch hunting abilities.

Combine that with his improved decision making skills, the fast break has been a deadly weapon for us so far.

Yeah, and he never really lost that ability. It's just that this Miami offense is better than any in the league at manufacturing the one-on-one scoring situations that he thrives in
