I thought of two ideas: 1) Only the second of two 3-pt shots made counts as a three pointer. You can have a scoreboard graphic to show whether it's the money shot. This would improve the linear relation of points and it would create exciting strategies near the end of the game; and 2) Tweak the designated shooter rule you suggested where anyone can wear the headband but only two designated shooters can be on the court at any time. I like this idea because it could resemble old college games where there may be only one or two sharpshooters on the court and the player weaved around the court while the team ran plays and set picks to free them up for a shot. Teams would have to get creative to free up 3-pt shot opportunities rather than just parking shooters on the perimeter. To do so would create more weaving in-and-out player movement rather than strictly ball movement which, in my opinion, would create a more visually exciting brand of basketball.

If you couple eliminating goaltending with another "bad idea" of raising the rim, suddenly it's more interesting. If you tied rim height to avg. player height, it would have jumped up 5 inches since 1950 and who knows how much since Ole' Jimmy N. (5'10") set the rim anew in 1892.
